The Park District is working with Wight & Company to master plan Oakton Park to outline the future vision for both the site and the building.
The renovation project is made possible by the award of a Museum Grant through the State of Illinois. This grant was awarded in 2014 then put on hold, and funds were just released in late 2018. The first phase of the project to be completed in Fall 2019 is the renovation of the pathway. Future phases include the replacement of the existing picnic shelter with a larger structure that includes an outdoor fireplace. In addition, four interactive educational panels will be installed on the exterior of the existing Nature Center building as well as a series of educational interpretive signs throughout the prairie and pond area.

At the annual meeting of the Midwest Institute of Park Executives (MIPE) held on January 9, 2020, Kristi Solberg, Assistant Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at the Park Ridge Park District, was presented the Park Professional of the Year award. This is the most prestigious honor a member of MIPE can receive. Kristi is the first female to receive this award in the 82 year history of the organization. Additionally, this recognition is not awarded every year, but rather only when a worthy candidate is presented. The last time the award was given was in 2014.
The Park Ridge Park District is committed to ensuring the public is safe in all that we do. Recently, we have become aware that questions have come up about some of the lawn care products we are using.
It is our responsibility to be transparent and provide education about the District’s business. President Harrington stated, “to devote the appropriate amount of time to the issue, as current Board President, it is my intention to call a Special Board Meeting on November 14th to discuss our current District lawn care practices. A special meeting will give this subject matter the time and transparency it deserves.” We welcome anyone who would like to learn more about this topic to join us on November 14 at 7:00pm.
